Research on hypochlorous acid mouthwash

Studies have shown that in the dose range of 15 ppm to 3.75 ppm, the antibacterial activity of OxOral® mouthwash has no difference (p>0.05) compared with 5μg/mL tetracycline (antibiotic), that is, the two effects are equivalent. Therefore, a 3.75 ppm OxOral® mouthwash (inhibition rate of 99.7±7.7%) was determined as the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) value. In addition, residual inhibition was observed at 1.875 ppm and 0.938 ppm, and the inhibition rates were 81.1±6.0% and 53.3±2.8%, respectively (as shown in the figure below). When no visible microbial growth is observed, the MBC (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration) value is 7.5 ppm.

Normal saline had no inhibitory effect on Helicobacter pylori biofilm

However, when the biofilm cells were treated with 0.938 ppm, 0.469 ppm and 0.234 ppm OxOral® mouthwash, the antibacterial rates reached 99.9±5.5%, 89.1±1.2% and 35.5±0.9%, respectively (as shown in the figure below); 5μg/mL The bacteriostatic rate of tetracycline reaches 100±13.5%. Compared with the normal saline control group, no difference was observed in OxOral® mouthwash with a concentration of 0.117ppm (p>0.05).

The effect of mouthwash with hypochlorous acid as the main ingredient on Helicobacter pylori is as follows

When the effective chlorine concentration is 7.5ppm-15ppm, hypochlorous acid has a good bactericidal effect on Helicobacter pylori; 

When the effective chlorine concentration is greater than 3.75ppm, hypochlorous acid has a good bacteriostatic effect on Helicobacter pylori;

When the available chlorine concentration is greater than 0.938 ppm, hypochlorous acid has a good inhibitory effect on Helicobacter pylori biofilm;

When the effective chlorine concentration is within 15 ppm, hypochlorous acid does not show cytotoxicity and has high safety.

This study shows that a mouthwash with hypochlorous acid as the main functional component has high antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects and low cytotoxicity against Helicobacter pylori.
